To launch the Julia L. Tan Education Foundation Challenge Series, Grace Christian High School sponsored the “1st Grace English Proficiency Interschool Competition,” (G-EPIC) last January 23, 2008 at the Little Theatre of Grace Christian Church. This event which started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 3:00 p.m, was hosted by the Grace English Club Officers, under the adviser Mr. Eduardo Canlas, HS English teacher, and coordinated by Mrs. Jonalyn Estrada, HS English subject area coordinator.

During the Opening Ceremonies, Dr. James Tan, Principal, warmly welcomed the sixty-six (66) participants and eleven (11) coaches who came for the competition. He also welcomed and introduced the eleven (11) participating schools: Chiang Kai Shek College, Gideon Academy, Gospel Light Christian Academy, La Consolacion College, PAREF-Northfield School, People of Grace Christian School, School of Saint Anthony of QC, St. Joseph School of Fairview Inc., St. Mary’s College QC, St. Stephen’s High School and United Christian Academy.
The G-EPIC consisted of two rounds. For the first round of the contest, participants were assigned to their particular rooms either in C-1, C-2 or C-3. A written exam, which was first taken by the contestants, served as the elimination round in the system. Only ten students with the highest scores out of a total number of 63 participants were chosen to proceed to the next round. Challenging though, the ten contestants had to go through an extemporaneous speech for the last round. Each contestant was given one question and had a chance to compose their speech within five minutes in an isolation room.
Out of the ten, only three were declared winners. With judges Dr. Zenaida Lumba, Ms. Lelina Forneas, and Mr. Jason See, the three winners were decided. The 3rd place was awarded to Catherine Co of Chiang Kai Shek College and Rona Concepcion of the same school was 2nd place. The champion was Grace Wang of St. Stephen High School.
This G-EPIC would not be a success if not for the hard work of the Grace English Club officers, the untiring efforts and unlimited support of the HS English faculty, and the overflowing blessings of God.
To God be the glory!
